Mary Farrar, who heads up the organization with the help of her husband, Edward, is working hard this summer to establish Douglas Fluhrer Park as a cultural hub.

The Farrars started out with a vision of a waterfront trail extending from the LaSalle Causeway to Kingston Mills. But Neal Unsworth, manager of City Parks Department, had other ideas.
The group feels it important to engage the entire city with the revitalization project.
The area also has an interesting industrial history. At one time, the area was home to various businesses including a brewery, a woolen mill, a gristmill, and a shipyard and dry dock.
The Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour, which was on hiatus for a number of years, recently revived in the hopes of promoting Douglas Fluhrer Park as a wonderful waterfront park and community resource, promoting the Inner Harbour Heritage Trail and bringing together the citizens of the diverse community.
In keeping with their goals, the group has planned a number of events over the course of the summer, including Family Wednesday afternoons throughout July. Matt Ellerback will follow with his live turtles and discussions on turtles and ecology.
Drumming circles will also take place on many Sundays throughout the summer.
The second annual Cottage Bocce Ball tournament will take place Aug. 23 in co operation with Kingston Community Health Centres.

Farrar said membership in the organization is open to local members of the community, as well as to any person interested in preserving and enhancing Kingston waterfront.
So far, the group has amassed more than 400 members, each hoping to make the Inner Harbour a popular Kingston destination.
