"In these economical times, there really is a need for something like this.
"You have to remember that only one person might come to us with a voucher for a food parcel but we could end up giving them provisions for them and their family.
Food Bank is helping those who have lost everything in the downturn
We start by sorting through the food donations. There is a mountain of stock that needs moving from one side of the room and arranging on the shelves.
It is as well packed as a busy supermarket but that is thanks to the generosity of people who make regular donations.

Debt problems, alcohol misuse, redundancy, relationship breakdowns and bereavement are just some of the reasons, says Phil, that people are coming to the Derby Food Bank.

The pair volunteer every Tuesday and try not to miss the afternoon session.

"They come from all walks of life and all have very different stories to share about why they need our help today."

Working with Phil today is Eluned Craig and her friend, 74 year old Roberta Krzyzanek from Allestree.
"It has certainly opened my eyes and my heart.
"We always offer them a listening ear and the chance to have a cup of tea.
"People come and collect a food parcel and they end up talking to us.
Last year, local schools collected for the Food Bank. But every week, the congregation at Derby City Church, in Curzon Street, brings provisions into church and to fill a huge collection bin.

"In honesty, I have been surprised by some of their stories.
Eluned is a retired teacher from Mickleover.
The store cupboard is not big but volunteers have made perfect use of the space. Along each of the walls, shelving has been fixed to house the food.
"We've helped 481 people since we opened last year," said Phil.
"People have been very kind to us and this means we can provide healthy, well stocked bags of food to those who come to us."

"We make up bags for single people, couples and families. We try and make each parcel big enough so it can last for three days."
