"It's becoming a huge deal and we need to put a stop to it," Varcoe said.
They kicked off their new motto with a pep rally on the first day back of the second semester with students taking the vow to stand up for others.
That's what the entire Sioux Falls School District is hoping to do. Teachers and staff have now been trained under the Olweus Bully Prevention Model, a national program that teaches about bullying and all of its different forms and harmful effects. It also teaches about the different roles people play in bullying like: the bully, bully followers, the person being bullied or the bystander.
"I hope bullying stops, and people know what they're doing," Stone said.
The students will do similar activities throughout the year to learn about the environment in which bullying exists, how to respect others and how to know what to do if they see someone being bullied.
Fighting Back Against Bullying
Each school is taking what they learned from the Olweus training and making it their own. At Memorial, they've come up with the theme 'Dare You To Move.'
Bullying can happen just about anywhere, and for many KELOLAND kids, it's something they have to deal with almost daily.
In the seven years Varcoe has been with the school, she's seen the problem grow dramatically.
"We wrote that on a piece of paper, what people have said to you. Then we crumpled it up and then re opened it to show it's still there," Diaz said.
And school officials are hopeful every student will 'Dare To Move' to do just that.

"It's sad; kids are scared to come to school," Erica Varcoe, Behavior Specialist at Memorial Middle School, said.

Because bullying can take a toll on its victims and have long lasting effects, many schools are trying to put a stop to it. A program now being used in the Sioux Falls School District not only teaches kids about bullying, but teaches them to stand up for one and other.
These are lessons many of the students are excited to learn if it means keeping bullying out of their school.
The first lesson of the program is about words and how they can not only be hurtful, but also be considered bullying.

"It's just kind of giving the staff and students the tools they need to stand up to it, put a stop to it, kind of become their own advocates and their peers advocates," Varcoe said.
"This program is so easy. It lets them be advocates for themselves and for their peers. And if they do that, we absolutely can get it to stop," Varcoe said.
