Fire department remind homeowners to shovel out hydrants
"That hydrant belongs to the entire neighborhood when we need to use it, so make it yours," Tyk said. "Do it as a team or as a group."
Both Tyk and Berendt said digging out a fire hydrant could make a critical difference in the event of an emergency.
"The rule of thumb is (a fire) doubles in size every 17 seconds," he said.
It is recommended to shovel out at least 18 inches around the hydrant for fire department access.

North Shore Fire Department is being proactive by putting out signs near hydrants.
Lt. Daniel Berendt with the Milwaukee Fire Department said trucks carry about 500 gallons of water, but a hydrant buried in snow could cause a fire to double in size before it can be used.
