Ryan Tuttle, owner of The Lawn Barber based in Hampton, doesn't view it as competition.
"We're getting them jobs that they wouldn't have gotten," Mahoney said.
The company eyed Hampton Roads because smartphone users with local ZIP codes had been downloading the app and about five different local landscape companies reached out to the company wanting to participate, Mahoney said.

By May, the company launched the Mowz app, which is now in 30 markets across the country with more than 700 participating providers, he said. Mowz moved into Virginia with a recent launch in Fredericksburg and is planning to hit Richmond next.
The Lawn Barber has been using Angie's List, where customers can find vetted reviews of companies and discounts, to promote its business, Tuttle said. While he'd pay 30 percent to get a new customer, Tuttle said he couldn't envision continuing to pay that regularly.
