PIERRE, SD Flooding on the Missouri River last year caused some who rely on the river for their livelihood to worry about the flood waters washing away the fish and their profits at the same time.
"There still a few salmon around, but it tougher than years past. The flooding did affect the salmon," Palmer said.
"You can pretty much drop in any part of the reservoir, up or down the reservoir, and catch fish right now. Some days it tougher. Don get me wrong. It not an automatic; it fishing but it been good, a real good bite," Palmer said.
This is Palmer 42nd guiding trip this year, and he yet to return to shore without limiting out. He says success on the water translates into success for other businesses along the river too.
heard you can come out and get a lot of fish. I like to say I out here to get the big monster fish, but yeah, I want to catch a lot of fish while I here," Minnesota resident Roger Ahrens said.
Palmer says the bigger fish are coming in a little thinner this year, but says that why the bite is so good.
Palmer gets paid to help people catch fish. He runs Dakota Walleye Guide Service and spends most of his time on Lakes Oahe and Sharpe on the Missouri River near Pierre. Based on his experience, last year flooding hasn changed business at all.
"I think their business is up because the word is out on this tremendous bite we having. And the motels are full in Pierre. The lodges are full. The boat ramps are packed. There are just a lot of people coming right now and the bite is driving that," Palmer said.
A 28 inch northern pike and 19 inch walleye were among those pulled in by Roger Ahrens and his son. They drove more than 300 miles from Minnesota to fish for walleye because in the three years they been making the trip, they always caught their limits.
