"Khandahar is kind of the worst part of the whole country as far as the violence, and there are relatively peaceful areas in Afghanistan where people are still able to farm and grow food, so even for people to understand and feel that Afghanistan has that potential is important," said Armstrong.
Armstrong was having a conversation with her son in law, who had just come back from Khandahar after a stint with the military, and she mentioned to him that MacDonald was doing work up in the northern part of Afghanistan. He said it was really a different place in the northern part of the country than the public was used to hearing about.
Part of what appealed to Armstrong about FGC was that the projects were small with a concentrated group of people working on them, and huge sums of money weren't being mishandled, something she saw quite a bit of over the years.
